Ruby arrives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall
The One and Only IvanRuby arrives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade as a new attraction, but her first moments there reveal the difference between the value Mack assigns her and the care Stella offers. After the four-o’clock show, a delivery truck brings the baby elephant to the mall. Mack expects her to draw customers; Stella instead approaches her as a vulnerable newcomer, making this arrival the beginning of their relationship and a test of how much protection she can provide.
Arrival as a Commercial Transaction
The arrival follows a chain of information and movement. Bob sees the truck approaching the parking lot and hurries to tell Ivan and the others. Because Ivan cannot leave his domain, Bob’s alert gives him advance notice of what is happening beyond it. Mack then opens the sliding metal delivery door near the food court, and the truck backs toward the entrance. When the driver opens it, Ivan sees a small trunk reaching out from the dark interior and understands that Stella had been right about the new arrival.
Mack introduces the baby elephant to the mall as a business opportunity. He calls her Ruby and describes her as six hundred pounds of fun, openly linking her presence to the prospect of selling more tickets. Later, he explains that he bought her cheaply from a bankrupt circus out west, which had received her from Africa and kept her for only a month before going out of business. Her journey into the mall is therefore not presented as a considered placement: she has been passed from one failing enterprise to another, while Mack immediately calculates her appeal as a baby animal. His description of her as a potential attraction contrasts with Ivan’s attention to the fact that she is frightened and unable to leave the truck on her own.
Stella Coaxes Ruby Down
The men’s shouting continues while Ruby remains inside the truck. Mack decides that Stella may be able to coax her out and releases her from her enclosure. Stella pushes past him and moves toward the ramp, limping heavily because of her swollen foot. The difficulty of that approach matters: she does not wait for the newcomer to be brought to her, but makes her way toward Ruby despite her own pain.
Partway up the ramp, Stella pauses, and the commotion inside the truck stops. She reaches her trunk into the empty space; Ruby’s small trunk appears again, tentatively reaching out. Stella curls her trunk around Ruby’s, and the two make soft rumbling sounds. The exchange precedes Ruby’s movement down the ramp. Her hesitant steps are described in a measured rhythm, and she emerges as very small beside Stella, unsteady on her feet. The scene turns on contact rather than command: where the shouting has not brought Ruby out, Stella’s quiet approach allows her to follow.
Protection at the Enclosure
Stella leads Ruby toward her domain, with Mack and two other men following. Ruby stops at the entrance. Mack tries to push her forward, but she does not move; Stella does not move either. When Mack raises a broom, Stella steps between him and Ruby. Her position makes the new relationship visible before either elephant is settled inside: Stella places herself between the newcomer and the threat she perceives.
Stella then uses her trunk to nudge Ruby into the enclosure, entering only after Ruby has gone in. Mack shuts the door behind them. Ivan sees their trunks entwined and hears Stella whispering, while Bob recognizes the bleakness of the welcome Ruby has received. The ending holds both shelter and confinement together. Ruby is no longer alone in the truck, and Stella is beside her, but their first refuge is an enclosure whose door Mack controls.
Significance of the Arrival
Ruby’s arrival establishes the competing terms on which the mall receives animals. Mack treats her youth as a selling point and her distress as an obstacle to getting her inside. Stella responds to that same distress through a protective gesture, using the limited freedom she has to approach Ruby and shield her. The contrast is not abstract: it unfolds through the delivery entrance, the halted movement at the truck, the joined trunks, and Stella’s position between Ruby and Mack.
The scene also begins the bond between Stella and Ruby under conditions neither has chosen. Ruby reaches the mall after a bankrupt circus has already kept and transported her; Stella, herself confined and physically impaired, becomes the first figure to offer her reassurance. Yet the care does not undo the terms of Ruby’s arrival. Mack closes the enclosure, and the final image of the elephants together remains inseparable from the locked-in setting. Their connection begins as an act of comfort within captivity, while Ivan’s narration lets the reader see how sharply that comfort differs from the business that brought Ruby there.
